Though using a mobile hotspot is not the same as checking Instagram on your phone, it still uses a considerable amount of data, especially if you're downloading articles with lots of images or streaming video offline. The amount of data that is used varies from usage to usage; 30 minutes of checking e-mail will use less than 1MB of data, while 30 minutes of checking Facebook will use roughly 40MB.

Because of this, cell phone carriers will normally charge an extra fee if you use your phone as a hotspot, since the usage is so much higher than regular data surfing. Some carriers will even designate a certain amount of your data to mobile hotspot while portioning off the rest as simple data. The portions can change between companies, so it's important for each person to check their own mobile plans to confirm usage rates. Most carriers will have a mobile hotspot allowance of nearly 10GB, and once that is used, the speed greatly diminishes.

Fortunately, those people will still be able to use the data without being charged for it as long as they don't mind slower speeds.

Simply put, a mobile hotspot is a feature that allows other devices such as laptops and desktops to harness the data capabilities of a phone in order to surf the internet on their own screens.

This is most often utilized in rural settings or where Wi-Fi connectivity is not always accessible. There may also be an Ethernet option. For USB tethering you will of course need to have connected your handset to whatever device you want to share its connection with via USB cable, at which point it should be a one-tap setup.
