How long is independence pass

For most Coloradans, the yellow lines are only suggestions and speed limits are a total mystery. Two sections of this road are even too narrow for two cars to pass. The builder's solution -- stop painting the yellow line in those sections and let the drivers figure out what to do both sections include blind turns btw. You may be backing down a narrow ledge if the oncoming traffic manages to stop in time.

Looked up some place and decided to go here. Absolutely gorgeous. Highway was closed, so parked and skiied the highway itself. So cool! Great workout, beautiful views!!

Venture 1 contribution. I had heard of Independence Pass and naively thought it must be a valley between the Rocky mountains. Driving home from Aspen it would be a pretty ride. Boy was I wrong. I have never been so scared in my life. As my husband white knuckled it up to over 12, feet on narrow two way switchback roads not wide enough for 2 cars, I begged him to not go over 12 mph.

It felt like more than enough speed. When the road wasn't wide enough for two lanes they just had no middle line- if you meet another car you can figure it out. Makes sense. I also pleaded for our children to be silent so daddy could concentrate on driving while mommy prayed for our lives. At the top is the continental divide. They have pit toilets I was good. Once down this horrid road I had my husband pull over so I could access the trunk. I had to change my clothes that I had sweat through and have a shot of rum which we had packed from our vacation.

I will never go on this road again. If I could rate this -5 I would. I think it took 5 years off my life. Shay Houston, TX 12 contributions. It was the scariest, most treacherous drive I have EVER taken in my entire life - yet, after it all - I regret nothing!!! Cons: Other drivers are ruthless zoom around you as if you are in a wrong for caring about your life No barricades if you slip off of the cliff, you die!

Hardly any road lines at one point there was only a one lane highway!!! We are 12,ft above sea level- are we supposed to fly around an oncoming vehicle??? Talk about a freak out!!!! Next time I will be able to just ride and enjoy the views while someone else sweats.

Yet, it is a memory my 2 teens and I will cherish forever. Sheryl B 6 contributions. Never again - glad to be alive!! Scariest, worst experience of my life. Couldn't turn around and get off once on it. I'm not sure how anyone could say this is a beautiful ride when you are gripping the steering wheel going ten miles an hour up a two lane - two direction road which is actually the size of a one and half lanes- with one unlucky side having a thousands of feet drop without side rails.

I couldn't stop shaking from fear - which I thought might itself be enough to turn my car that simple one inch throwing me over the edge.

If you love life - Don't try it. Go the long way -the scenery is just as beautiful! MistChaser Denver, CO 61 contributions. Once you're over Independence Pass and are looking at it from the scenic pull-out, the pass is great.

But for those of us who are scared spitless by heights, especially drop-off heights with nothing but air to catch the car if you were to careen off the road! Remember, I'm totally afraid of heights. We didn't careen off the edge or even come close as far as I know. I was too busy playing all the languages in our Garmin to keep my mind - and eyes - off of the drive we were making.

There is another pass-free route into Aspen and it didn't make me close my eyes even once. AspenRealLifeAspen Aspen 77 contributions. There have been many a thrill seeker jumping or diving off of a cliff into this hypothermic swimming hole, carved out from where the Roaring Fork River runs through a five-foot opening below The Grottos on Independence Pass. I personally do not recommend it for there have been many accidents, but there are a few places for the kids to jump in higher up the river that are much safer and perhaps just as thrilling.

When done with the Grottos look for the trailhead to the ice caves that were formed when the Roaring Fork River was swollen with meltwater from receding Ice Age glaciers about 15, year ago. After the caves drive up the rest of windy Route 82 up to 12, feet above sea level to the summit of Independence Pass that marks the Continental Divide. There are many hikes that you will pass along the way that range from moderate to difficult so check your hiking trail map before driving.
